Meet Mr. CHesnutt

Hello! I’m Phillip Chesnutt and I love math! I am a certified math teacher licensed in multiple states, with experience teaching math both in a classroom and as a private tutor. Although I love working with students as a classroom teacher, what I really enjoy is helping people on a more individual level. As a math tutor, I am able to provide the more direct coaching that many students need to take ownership of their own learning and successfully learn math. I meet students where they are right now and help them develop their skills and confidence so that they can achieve much more than they ever believed. I do not teach to the “average” student, but instead, I always provide a unique experience for each student based on their individual needs and goals.

My approach to tutoring is to first get to know each student and have conversations about their goals and how they think about math. This allows me to develop an individualized plan for each student. Students who have worked with me in the past have improved their grades in math courses and on tests like the ACT and SAT. What is even more important to me is that students also increase their confidence and grow to understand math on a deeper level. Let me help you get better at math and learn to love it too!

What Can you Expect in a Session?

Each tutoring session may be different, depending on the needs of each student. Tutoring sessions typically include some of the following:

  • Reviewing concepts and lessons learned in a class and discussing and practicing difficult or confusing concepts.

  • Reviewing homework, working through addtional problems together, or reviewing incorrect problems on homework, classwork, or exams.

  • Preparing for an upcoming exam. Students can also bring any study guides or problem sets provided by their teacher and we can use this to prepare for upcoming exams.

How Often Should Tutoring Occur?

  • Although any amount of tutoring is beneficial, research suggests that high-frequency tutoring (at least twice a week) is the most effective. Therefore, we recommend scheduling at least two one-hour sessions per week initially. If this doesn’t work for your schedule, however, you can schedule sessions as often as you like.

  • The schedule and frequency of tutoring sessions can be changed at any time, and it is totally up to you. We do not ask you to sign a contract or commit to a certain number of sessions.

Where Does Tutoring Occur?

  • Wherever is convenient for you!

  • Many clients prefer to have tutoring sessions occur in their homes, but we can also meet in a library or other public place that works for you. I also am happy to meet with homeschool groups.

  • Virtual sessions are also available (using Zoom).
